Trash Booms Project on Tijuana River A Bust

There has been news in the papers and on television lately about the $4.7 million dollar trash booms placed across the Tijuana River and at Goat Canyon and how successful they were in stopping a majority (but not all) of trash washing down from the hills and gullies of Tijuana. I heard that to date, they have captured upwards of 80 tons of trash. This includes plastics, appliances, tires, dead animals, and so on.

The elephant in the room is never addressed when reporting on this. It is mentioned that none of it can be recycled because of its contamination and it is removed and taken to our landfills.

WHY IS NO THOUGHT GIVEN TO RETURNING IT TO MEXICAN LANDFILLS?? Our landfills in San Diego County are reaching capacity. We should not be adding contaminated trash from another country into our landfills. There should be agreements with Mexico to take back their trash.

We not only process the majority of their sewage now - and through a flawed and inadequate system at that, which has caused horrific pollution up and down our coastline, we are also processing their toxic trash and placing it in our landfills.

This needs to be brought to light and addressed.

After spending 5 years and over $4.7 million of tax payers money, the San Diego Water Quality Board sponsored TRASH BOOMS DO NOT WORK.

In each location where these have been tried, they have failed.

What is your opinion? Does it seem like that spending $31,333 per each blue barrel in gross profiteering? At material supply houses they are less than $200 each.
