Report your concern to the local jurisdiction for evaluation. Their Traffic Engineers will analyze traffic data, conduct studies, and develop solutions to address traffic congestion, safety concerns, and other transportation issues.

In accordance with State statute, speed limits are evaluated every seven years but a speed limit can be reviewed anytime upon request.

Recommended initial steps:

1. Determine the jurisdiction for the roadway. Roads within Bonita (Zip Code 91902) can be City of Chula Vista, City of National City or an unincorporated area of County of San Diego. Refer to map.

2. Report the concern to the appropriate agency using their contact information or web-based tool/ app.

The City of Chula Vista Traffic Engineering has helpful information and links on their web page including a “Report a Traffic Issue” button. Their (appointed) Traffic Safety Commission meets monthly. These FAQs provide additional background including how speed limits are established.

The County of San Diego Traffic Engineering also has links and contacts on their web page. Their (appointed) Traffic Advisory Committee (TAC) meets bimonthly.

3. Record your actions and agency responses. Note dates, names, case number (if applicable,) and nature of the various interactions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions such as “how long will it take to hear back?” This chronology is documentation that could be helpful down the line.

Be patient. There are other concerns in their queue. Traffic engineering is a professional discipline licensed by the State of California for a reason. The evaluation and internal review will take time.

Resident Mike Clowers serves on the County’s Traffic Advisory Committee (TAC.) He updates the Sweetwater Community Planning Group when a TAC agenda includes a District 1 item. Mike also routinely provides Traffic related information during Sweetwater Valley Civic Association meetings.
