Sunnyside Saddle Club Starts Their New Season Off with a Show Well Done

The morning was cool and crisp, a perfect time to watch a horse show. This past Sunday was the first show for Sunnyside Saddle Club in a series of many.

A lot of people turned out to enjoy the day.

Rohr Park was in full use. The trails were taken advantage of by walkers, joggers, bike riders, e-bikes and families. Golfers were enjoying the weather close by on the Chula Vista Golf Course. Two firetrucks sped by on Sweetwater Road, sirens blazing.

Participants checked in at the registration booth, efficiently set up to speed the process. A sign had been posted on the southern trail asking travelers to slow down and pass quietly as not to excite the horses. The snack bar was stocked with goodies and the ribbons to be won were hanging on the outside wall.

Eighteen horses from four barns were showing: Willow Glen (El Cajon); Red Barn Training (Sweetwater Farms); Ruocco Equestrian Training (Mt. Miguel Equestrian Center) and Sunnyside Stables. All riders were welcome, whether they be boarders or have horses at home.

The horse show started at 8AM and one of the first classes was a Pleasure Class. Riders participated using two totally different riding styles, English and Western. The equipment didn't matter, the emphasis was placed on the horse. Riders were asked to walk, trot, gallop and back their steeds.

English Hunter and Jumper classes were scheduled near the end of the horse show.

Judge Susan Strahan came all the way from Reno, Nevada to judge the horses and their riders.

Sponsors' banners were hung on the back fence. Please thank these people when you see them and be sure to use their services whenever you can.

The show completed just after one pm and attendees hung around for a little while for photo taking and to show off their ribbons.

Future horse shows will take place on the first Sunday of every month through November at the Rohr Park Horse Arena. The class lists, class descriptions and rules may be found here.

Click on Sunnyside Saddle Club Registration to signup for classes or volunteer to help. Participants may also reserve a tie rail or trailer spot. Equestrians must join Sunnyside Saddle Club to participate.

As I sat there taking it all in, I couldn't help but think how lucky we are to have this idyllic hide-away for our horse activities.

Kudos to Sunnyside Saddle Club for a fabulous show and helping to keep the Rohr Park Horse Arena open for all to use!
