A prowler was arrested Tuesday night after breaking into a home while a family was inside, sparking a large multi-agency response that included air support and K9 units.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. on February 10, 2026, in the 5500 block of Amaya Drive.

According to the La Mesa Police Department, officers had contacted the suspect earlier in the evening after reports of him loitering in the area. When officers attempted to investigate, the suspect fled.
A short time later, police say the man broke into a nearby residence while a family was inside. The occupants quickly evacuated the home and called 911.
Officers established a perimeter as ASTREA air support from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department searched overhead. The helicopter crew located the suspect hiding in brush about a block away.
K9 units from the National City Police Department and the Sheriff’s Department were also deployed during the search.
Ground units eventually made contact and arrested the suspect on Water Street.
Witnesses reported the suspect had blood covering his clothing. Blood was also visible near the broken window at the residence where the forced entry occurred. It was not immediately clear whether the blood belonged to the suspect or if anyone else was injured.
Police remained on scene late into the night collecting evidence. As of Tuesday night, La Mesa Police were still determining what charges the suspect will face.
The investigation remains ongoing.
