I had seen the road work signs to the east several times as I was leaving my home but was busy traveling to the west. I was already dealing with the construction area at the bike park and had been through it two or three times. Finally around 1:20PM, I had finished my errands and decided to go see what was going on.

Boy oh boy, this was a much bigger event than the bike park road crews. An enormous pine tree on the hill on the south side of the 6400 block of San Miguel had come crashing down!

You can see how huge this tree was just a few hours before it toppled.

Here is what I saw on my first discovery excursion. (Please ignore my filthy windshield!)

The phone lines were enmeshed in the tree so when it fell, it took those lines down.

Plenty of signage and cones were needed, all provided by Safe-T-Lite. I had followed their truck in earlier from Sweetwater Road and had wondered who needed that many signs. I soon found out.

The AT&T vehicle was parked farther west by a telephone pole, waiting to reconnect the lines. He would have to return much later to complete his work.

At 6:30PM, I wondered what it would look like all cleaned up. Hah! I walked over to the site and it was still an event in progress. One workman told me they would be at it all night, at least until midnight if not longer.

Here are the photos from my second expedition.

The guy in the bucket—who was cutting the tree—already looked exhausted and he had five or more hours to go! The limbs were gigantic and they were cutting them in 2-3 foot lengths. It was much like eating a whale (nod to Melinda Mae), one bite at a time.

I'm curious to see what it looks like tomorrow!
