CHP Sends Two Officers to Take Charge of Bonita Traffic Concerns

On the television show CHiPs, Erik Estrada played Ponch and Larry Wilcox played Jon. Both rode motorcycles. Ponch and Jon are not patrolling Bonita-Sunnyside, we're getting something real.

Some of you may have grown up watching CHiPs with California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers Jon Baker and Frank "Ponch" Poncherello cruising the freeways of Los Angeles, solving crimes and helping people in trouble. The television cop show aired for six seasons, from 1977-1983.

Now we have our own CHP officers, one on a motorcycle and one in a vehicle.

At the Bonita-Sunnyside and Chula Vista Public Safety Forum in February 2026, CHP Captain Reggie Williams stated he would be bringing more resources to our community. He told us that two officers would be in place by July.

CHP Captain Reggie Williams was true to his word and made good on his promise. He gave us two officers of our own, motorcycle officer Marcus Marlen and vehicle officer Jesse Matias. Not fully our own, we will be sharing the two men with the communities of Lincoln Acres, 4S and Otay Lakes.

The two officers will be patrolling the unincorporated areas listed above plus the Bonita-Sunnyside area. They will be working 9-1/2 hour shifts, five days a week.
