A stalled vehicle caused a major freeway pile-up early Sunday morning on northbound Interstate 15 near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, leaving multiple people injured and prompting a SIG Alert, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Investigators say a female driver in a black Toyota had stalled in the northbound lanes and was standing beside her car when a Good Samaritan pulled over and urged her to move to safety. Moments after she stepped away, another vehicle crashed into her car, triggering a chain-reaction collision that involved at least four additional vehicles.
Two drivers were transported to nearby hospitals with unknown injuries. The incident led to a SIG Alert and a full closure of northbound lanes for cleanup and investigation.
While the freeway remained closed, a suspected drunk driver struck a CHP patrol car that was blocking lanes to protect the crash scene. Fortunately, no officers were injured in the secondary collision.
CHP is investigating whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the initial crash. The freeway was later reopened after several hours of investigation and debris removal.
