At the March 3, 2026 Sweetwater Community Planning Group meeting, DPW Project Manager Robert Sanchez presented a concept for new bike lanes on both sides of Bonita Road. (DPW stands for Department of Public Works, San Diego County.)

The Local Roadway Safety Plan identifies this project as a safety priority at the top of the list. The primary objective is "to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes by providing cyclists with a designated and buffered bike lane."

According to Mr. Sanchez, the project was initiated because of increased traffic and accidents in the area. The attendees were surprised to learn that toll-avoidance traffic on Bonita Road has grown from 10,000 vehicles a day to nearly 19,000 a day . . . almost double.

The bike lanes will be added from Central Avenue to the County limits (he referenced the large church on the south side of Bonita Road). Bonita Valley Community Church is located at 4744 Bonita Road. Church patrons will need to be extra cautious when turning into the parking lot on Sunday morning.

This section of Bonita Road will be slurry-sealed to provide a clean canvas in order to paint the new lines. Two five-foot wide bike safety lanes will be added, one lane on the north side and one lane on the south.

The southern lane will be painted bright green at "conflict zones" giving the cyclists more visibility to the motorists. Conflict zones are primarily egress and ingress areas such as driveways.

No additional land or right-of-way will be utilized in creating the safety zones.

We will also receive the benefit of two additional dynamic/variable speed warning signs with this project. I believe that these flashing speed reminders have been very instrumental in the slowing of hurriedness around other areas of Bonita-Sunnyside. Slow the haste (excessive speed) and less recklessness and mistakes may occur.

Mr. Sanchez graciously supplied the presentation to Sunnyside Common Sense so that the entire community could view it. It appears below.

After the presentation, Mr. Sanchez was very accommodating in answering the many questions asked by the attendees.

This presentation was on the non-action section of the agenda and will not move forward until the County has the funds to begin.
