REWIND: WHAT HAPPENED?

TOP ITEMS PASSED:
1. Board Item #14—Investing in Arts, Culture, and Creative Opportunity for All: We voted to invest $2.75 million for the Investing in Arts and Culture Initiative. This will establish new artist grant programs, create artist-in-residence opportunities across County departments, and provide dedicated support for the Black Arts and Culture District. Our creative economy is essential infrastructure for our binational region.
2. Board Item #15—Expanding Community-led Violence Prevention in Spring Valley with No Shots Fired Program: We increased public safety in Spring Valley. Through the “No Shots Fired” program and our partnership with Shaphat Outreach, trained community members serve as Violence Interrupters—mentoring youth and de-escalating conflicts before they turn violent. It’s a proven, community-led approach to breaking cycles of trauma.
3. Board Item #4—Set A Hearing for Consolidated Cost Recovery Proposal to Adopt Ordinances Related to Fees, Deposits, and Hourly Rates: The cost of living in San Diego is too high, and at the County we’re taking a hard look at the fees people pay to find real savings wherever possible. This item began our annual update process while continuing targeted relief, like waiving permit fees for nonprofits, cutting costs for veteran-owned food businesses, and reducing clean energy fees that save residents nearly $1.2 million each year.
PROCLAMATIONS I MADE:
1. Murdered and Missing Indigenous Peoples Day: We recognized and proclaimed May 5th as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples Awareness Day in San Diego County, bringing visibility to a crisis that too often goes unseen. Indigenous communities continue to face disproportionate violence and disappearances, and naming this reality is part of honoring those who are missing or have been taken.

2. National Nurses Week: We proclaimed May 6–12th, 2026 as National Nurses Week in San Diego County, honoring the nurses who provide skilled, compassionate care across our public health system and communities every day.
