The Tijuana River Valley Air Purifier Distribution Program is now available to assist residents affected by odors in the Tijuana River Valley.
The Air Improvement Relief Effort (AIRE) Program will distribute air purifiers and up to two replacement filters to 10,000 eligible households. Priority will be given to households with children, seniors (ages 65+), and those living closest to the Tijuana River Valley. Due to limited quantities, not all eligible households will receive an air purifier.
Eligible communities
Otay Mesa West
San Ysidro
Egger Highlands
Nestor
Tijuana River Valley
Imperial Beach
How to Apply
Proof of residency is required, and air purifiers will be mailed directly to the home. Applications can be submitted through the San Diego Air Pollution Control District (SDAPCD) website at sdapcd.org/filters.
Households previously on the waitlist for the County’s 2024 air purifier pilot program have been contacted directly regarding their eligibility.
For additional information, please visit the SDAPCD website at sdapcd.org/filters.

Editor's Note: We tend to ignore things that we think don't affect us. But I would like Bonita residents to pay attention to what is going on in Imperial Beach and Tijuana River Valley. The stench has gotten so bad down there that the County is now offering free air purifiers.
What does this have to do with Bonita?
Eleven years ago I was writing Coronado Common Sense and plotting the raw sewage plume as it edged up the coast, first to the Silver Strand and finally reaching the beaches of Coronado. It didn't reek but you wouldn't want to be in the water or walk barefoot on the beach.
If this pollution gets bad enough to put off an odor, that's when the Bonita community will realize their own involvement in a dirty Pacific Ocean coast. The delightful breezes we enjoy in Bonita blow directly over from the Coronado and Silver Strand areas. If the pollution there gets bad enough to emit an odor, that smell will blow right into our beautiful Bonita Valley.
