Son Accused of Crashing into 81-year-old Veteran
Prosecutors say the woman was previously warned about letting her 14-year-old son illegally ride the e-motorcycle before the veteran and beloved substitute teacher was critically hurt in the crash.

The E Bikes are getting absolutely out of control. My husband just barely missed a kid who rode out in front of him on Central this morning near Corral Canyon. He came home so shaken up and said if he hadn’t just redone his brakes, he wouldn’t have been able to stop (and he wasn’t speeding). He said the kid looked about 10 years old. I’m truly curious if parents know what their kids are up to on those bikes when they get them.
Why do so many children and teenagers have them? Would you let your kids ride around on the streets on a dirt bike or motorcycle? What makes an e-bike any different?—Lily R
100% agree they shouldn't be driven on the roads without a license. In the eastlake area my husband and I were driving home with our newborn and other baby and there was a mob of about 15 e bike kids. The “pack leader” was popping wheelies, cutting cars off, and seemed to be trying to start something with drivers. Parents and kids need to be held accountable for irresponsible driving. They can go on the road just stay in the bike lane. Ebikes arent above the law.—Caylyn M
Thank you for sharing. I’m not aware of the laws with e-bikes but they should ride on the bike lanes & obey the law . One of the was driving as if he was on a motorcycle on the car lane then proceeded to run a red light .—Matilde B O
I agree. And so many on here will say we are overreacting and need to “let kids be kids” but these are so different from regular bikes. I don’t want myself or my passengers to be traumatized for the rest of my life because some kid darted out in front of us. Not to mention that kid’s family and friends. It’s so dangerous.—Kate M
Yes, it is out of control. Last week, I saw a kid (maybe 12-13 years old) on an e-bike almost get hit by a car at the intersection of San Miguel Rd and Conduit Rd. Him and two other kids on their e-bikes blew through the stop sign at full speed. He made a sharp turn onto Conduit and nearly collided with an oncoming car. Sadly, I think many parents have an attitude of “it won’t happen to my kid”. There are even people in this group that say we should “leave the kids alone” because they’re just having “innocent fun”.—Frank M
I cant even let my kid ride his regular bike to 7-11 because of these inattentive and impatient drivers on San Miguel Rd. Just because the kids are wearing a helmet doesnt mean that it will save them when a car is going well over 25 mph on SM rd or 45 on Bonita rd. f that.—Wendy W

Parents need to know the law and what they are buying for their kids. E-motorcycles are NOT e-bikes - by law.—Susie M

I had an incident as well down on corral canyon. I was driving at night time and there were 3 kids doing all their tricks, going 10mph so I went in the middle line to passed them and they got upset, started to tailgate, flashing their lights at me. I live down on central Ave and they are always going up and down, slowing traffic or going so fast. They are not even aware of their surroundings. And please do not come with "let kids be kids" i can bet anything that those are the parents of the kids doing this kind of things. Yeah, let them be kids but also teach them that there are specific places where they can go and ride their bikes. Or to be respectful, to ride them in the bike lines.—Angélica P G

Agree 100% I’m an ER nurse & we hv seen an increase in trauma codes from E bike accidents!! Not safe & I don’t even think it’s legal for kids to ride E bikes on the streets?!—Janelle L C
I posted not long ago about a kid doing stupid stuff on his e-bike in the middle of the street on Central and I got roasted by people telling me I don’t have a life and kids are just having fun outside (like if that’s the ONLY thing they can do outside.. lol). Clearly a lot of parents are ok with their kids doing illegal and dangerous things… so if one of them gets injured I’m not gonna feel too bad for him or his/her parents—Marco M
I was downtown last week coming back from the airport near the bay and there was approximately 50 or more of these young men riding down the boardwalk, bike lane, and in the first two lanes of the street weaving in between cars. I'm pretty sure there's enough legislation, AKA laws, on the books that they can impound these bikes when they're used in a manner that is not following the rules of the road. Heavy fines and impoundment are likely necessary, possibly without warnings, when they are driving recklessly and performing exhibition feats on the street. And if they are not licensed drivers or licensed vehicles, then impound them immediately. And they don't get them back unless they pay a fee, attend classes on using motorized bicycles on the road (assuming they are street legal) and the ones that are not, they may not be used again on the street again without permanent forfeiture. In most cases I'm sure these are decent young men but in most cases they're also breaking the law.—Chris A
