A Walk in the Park

Sunday’s walk on the 3.3 mile loop trail around the Chula Vista Golf Course and through Rohr Park was delightful and revealed the following:
1. The Sweetwater Community Planning Group meets Tuesday November 4, 2025 at 7:00PM at the Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Station, 4900 Bonita Road. A meeting agenda was posted at the trail kiosk at the end of Otay Lake Road. The agenda was also posted at the fire station. However, a meeting notice did not appear in a community newspaper nor was the agenda available on the County of San Diego’s Sweetwater web page 72 hours in advance of the meeting. Notably, Agenda Item 7 is a consultant presentation on the San Miguel Road Drainage Preliminary Engineering Report.

2. A new banner hangs on the golf course fence across from the Bonita Valley Community Church. It read: Slice Society Restaurant Now Open Open Wednesday through Sunday, 7am to 5pm at the Chula Vista Golf Course. The restaurant had been closed for remodeling. Wheelchairs can now easily access the Slice Society restaurant from the main building entrance. An lift was installed to comply with the ADA [American Disabilities Act.] The menu appeared unchanged.

3. Graffiti reported by Bonita Granny last month is still there. I wonder what the City of Chula Vista’s graffiti abatement backlog is.
4. The plethora of mature trees sets Rohr Park apart from other parks. Some of those trees would likely be sacrificed to make room for more parking and recreation in the future. City staff is recommending a new vision for the City’s park and golf course to transform this City-owned land into an active community hub. This master plan, once approved, would be implemented over time as project funding is identified. The City Parks and Recreation Commission is expected to approve the staff’s recommendation at their next meeting on December 11, 2025. City Council approval would then follow in early 2026.

The date of the [November 2025] Rohr Park draft master plan public workshop #3 was unavailable so maybe that is no longer happening. However, if scheduled, this public workshop should appear on the City of Chula Vista calendar.
Lastly, deed restrictions on publicly-owned land apparently differ from those on privately-owned land. Last month, the San Diego City Council terminated inconvenient requirements that were connected to a 1983 grant deed. More about that ongoing controversy can be found from the Coalition to Preserve the Polo Fields Neighborhood.
