The Bonita Road Bicycle Safety Improvement Project will be discussed at the Special Meeting of the Sweetwater Community Planning Group next Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

The subject matter was first presented on March 6, 2026 by Project Manager Robert Sanchez, San Diego County Department of Public Works. To see the presentation, go to "County Introduces New Bike Lanes Project for Bonita Road."

According to Mr. Sanchez, the project was initiated because of increased traffic and accidents in the area. Toll-avoidance traffic on Bonita Road has grown from 10,000 vehicles a day to nearly 19,000 a day . . . almost double.

Mr. Sanchez will return on Tuesday of next week to discuss the Bonita Road Bicycle Safety Improvement Project and ask the SCPG Board to approve it.

The bike lanes need ‘no pedestrians or joggers in bike lanes’ signs along all of Bonita Road. There is a pedestrian trail just adjacent to the bike lanes.
