Vandals or the Wind?

Weren't those winds this past weekend something else?

A friend wanted to stop and fix the signs at Proctor Valley and San Miguel Road. She thought the wind had taken them down. I thought that they were the victim of something far more sinister.

These signs were pulled from the ground but ended up within a 10' circle. Strange . . . could happen. But you won't make me believe that the wind could pull a metal stand out of the sign on the right and not rip the plastic sign.

While I was there, I straightened up the flowers on the trailside memorial for David Ochoa and righted the candles.

"Descanso: A Spanish word meaning "resting place," commonly used for roadside crosses or markers commemorating a sudden death"—Wikipedia

I got a very sick feeling in my gut when I noticed that someone had kicked the heads off the ceramic horses planted in the ground. I don't believe that anyone would ride a horse over the memorial. I collected the plastic, miniature horses strewn everywhere and dug in the dirt with my hands to even the ground and stick them back in the earth.

David Ochoa was a ten-year-old boy full of joy and laughter. He would run his horse pass my house at break-neck speed and I would run outside thinking it was a loose horse. But it was always David, smiling and waving at me as I waved back.

I was the President of Bonita Valley Horsemen when we were notified of David's untimely death in July 2013. Two weeks later, I had my own catastrophic horse accident on the same trail, less than a mile away. It took three months for my initial recovery and to learn to walk again.

I survived, little David did not. The injustice of it all has always made me feel more connected to him. He'd be 23 years old now.

One more thing . . .

I was at the Rohr Park Horse Arena yesterday, meeting up with some horse friends.

There is now a THIRD set of keys on the message board.
