Where is the sewage at Coronado really coming from?
C4CC headed to Coronado this weekend to confirm what we already know:
The brown water and yellow sewage foam observed near Coronado Shores was NOT coming from the mouth of the Tijuana River.
In fact, water at the river’s mouth appeared clear.
So where is the pollution coming from?
The South Bay Ocean Outfall (SBOO) - a sewage discharge pipe located roughly 3 miles offshore that carries wastewater from the Tijuana region.
According to observations discussed during the meeting:
The pollution near Coronado aligned with the SBOO discharge area.
The river itself did not appear to be the source of the contaminated water observed that day.
The SBOO currently discharges tens of millions of gallons offshore every day.
Why does this matter?
Because if we’re serious about restoring water quality, protecting public health, and reopening our beaches, we have to identify the source of the problem and hold the responsible agencies accountable.
Imperial Beach and Coronado deserve:
Clean water
Healthy coastal ecosystems
Safe beaches
Real solutions
The big question remains:
If the pollution is being observed near the outfall, why are we continuing to rely on a system that keeps discharging sewage offshore?
