We recently hosted a federal press conference at the Lighthouse where HUD announced a new approach to homelessness that closely aligns with the work we're doing at the Rescue Mission. White House Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. was there to share his own personal history with addiction and why he feels "Treatment First" will work better than the current standard.
"San Diego Rescue Mission welcomed federal officials Wednesday for the unveiling of the new Treatment First Toolkit, a five-phase strategy focused on addiction treatment, recovery and housing. Outreach Director Carla Vanegas, who shared her own journey from addiction and homelessness to recovery, said SDRM believes in meeting people where they are and offering a path toward rehabilitation. HUD Senior Adviser Dr. Robert G. Marbut Jr. praised the Mission’s model, saying he urged federal officials to visit SDRM because it 'literally showcased everything we're trying to do.' ”—Channel 10 News (ABC)
