San Diego County to Retain "Super Sanctuary" Status

At the December 2024 County Supervisor's Board Meeting, then-Chair Nora Vargas proposed making San Diego County a "Super Sanctuary" jurisdiction. Nora, Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer and Supervisor Monica Montgomery-Steppe voted yes for the proposal. Supervisor Jim Desmond was the lone vote against it. Supervisor Joel Anderson was absent.

Nora Vargas abruptly resigned her position as County Supervisor within days. We're currently in the mist of a $6M+ election to remedy that problem.

Passing this "Super Sanctuary" status was like drawing a huge bull's-eye on the chest of San Diego County. Federal funds have been revoked and we're not as safe as we used to be because criminal immigrants are being released back on our streets.

At yesterday's County Supervisor Board meeting, Supervisor Jim Desmond revisited that December vote and proposed a new vote to repeal the policy.

It needed 3 yeses to pass.

Supervisors Desmond and Anderson voted yes (to appeal it), Supervisor Steppe voted against it and Supervisor Lawson-Remer abstained. The District 1 Supervisor seat is empty.

That left the vote at 2-1-1 and the agenda item died on the vine. Had Supervisor Lawson-Remer voted no, it would have been a 2-2 tie that could later be revisited. But now it cannot.

Supervisor Lawson-Remer killed the agenda item, never to be seen again. Supervisor Lawson-Remer is also the one that is proposing raising our taxes to cover our deficit caused by the first "Super Sanctuary" vote and the feds cutting our money. Supervisor Lawson-Remer is definitely not working in our County's best interest.
