In 1894, La Jolla Cove was an untouched paradise, known mostly to locals and a handful of curious travelers.
This small inlet with its emerald waters and rocky shoreline was a peaceful hideaway, perfect for picnics and painting.
Victorian cottages dotted the nearby bluffs, home to artists, scientists, and vacationers escaping the inland heat.
Sea lions lounged undisturbed, and tidepools sparkled at low tide.
There were no lifeguard towers or walkways—just raw coastal beauty.
This photo captures La Jolla before it became a tourist destination, a snapshot of its wilder, more poetic past.
