Coronado Bridge Under Construction (1968)

This 1968 image captures the Coronado Bridge in mid-construction an ambitious project that forever changed the city's transportation and skyline.
Stretching 2.1 miles across the San Diego Bay, the bridge was engineered with a graceful curve to allow Navy ships to pass beneath. Its elegant shape became a defining feature of the city.
At this stage, massive steel segments hovered over the bay, awaiting completion.
Residents watched with anticipation as a new era of direct access between downtown and Coronado came closer to reality.
The bridge officially opened the next year, in 1969.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Glad they got this completed. Can you imagine all those people traveling by ferry boat to get to this past weekend's NASCAR race?
It must have been something really special living in Coronado pre-bridge. I've heard so many stories and it sounded idyllic, like being captured in a time warp or Mayberry RFD.
