Grand Avenue reflected the promise of a city in the midst of a land boom, where dusty roads and timber-framed shops hinted at big dreams.
Located in the Pacific Beach area, the avenue was lined with early commercial buildings, some barely completed, serving a sparse but optimistic population.
Horse drawn wagons carried goods from nearby farms while small storefronts catered to the growing number of settlers.
The architecture was modest, often wooden structures with simple facades.
Life moved slowly here, but there was a sense of momentum as settlers looked to build homes, schools, and businesses that would anchor this part of San Diego’s coast.
