Tomorrow, I will be bringing forward an item to remove the County of San Diego’s dangerous “super sanctuary” status.
The original author of this policy has since resigned, and now it’s time to correct a reckless mistake that puts politics over public safety.
Just as a recap, we are talking about individuals who have been convicted of serious crimes—rapists, child abusers, burglars, and violent offenders. These are people who have been arrested, gone through the justice system, and are sitting in jail. And yet, under the current policy, these criminals are being released back onto our streets instead of being deported.
We are now shielding dangerous criminals—at the direct expense of public safety.
This isn’t a partisan issue. A recent Associated Press poll shows that over 80% of Americans agree that illegal immigrants convicted of violent crimes should be deported. That includes Democrats, Republicans, and independents alike.
If someone is here illegally and has been convicted of a violent crime, they should not be allowed to stay. Period.
