This past Saturday—in the darkness of night—the driver of a red Honda Civic sped down San Miguel Road before crashing or passing out . . . .no one will ever know what came first. Probably not even the driver.

There are no street lights on this road and if you've ever been out there, it's pitch black.

What alarms me is that he sped past so many houses, maybe your house. Some of the homes on San Miguel Road could be considered close to the road, especially if someone is zooming by and barely in control of their vehicle.

And where was he going? I don't think even he knew. The car was registered in Escondido so it's hard to know how many Bonita-Sunnyside roads he traversed that night.

The driver made it all the way to the eastern end of San Miguel Road, over the bridge spanning the SR-125, and to the arena at the end. At that point, he made a sharp left turn mowing down the metal security gate. That gate is a rolling gate on a track but he hit it so hard that he bent it in half, forcing it open.

These photos show the gate bent in half, the arc in the ground from the glide rail to the gate's final resting spot and the broken metal. The gate could not be welded or repaired. A new one will need to be installed. Click on images to enlarge.

He continued down the dirt road somehow managing to make the sharp right-hand turn. If he hadn't, he might have ended up in the Sweetwater Reservoir. Objects in his way seemed to be of no concern.

About that time, he ran off the road taking out the Game and Wildlife fence and ending up in a ditch. A huge palm tree was dangerously close and another 1,000 feet he would have run into the base of the San Miguel Mountains. He was literally at the end of the road.

He should consider himself extremely lucky. We all should.

I got the call from my johnny-on-the-spot reporter about 9:15 and left immediately to go to the scene. The Chula Vista Fire Department roared by, sirens screaming, and I followed them in through the gaping hole that had once been a security gate. They had sent an engine and an ambulance. Thank goodness for the light they provided because without it, you couldn't see a thing. Two cars from the California Highway Patrol arrived moments later.

Kudos to the Chula Vista Fire Department and paramedics, CHP officers and towing service driver. They were all pros, extremely efficient and polite through the whole event.
