LA MESA Calif. — A wrong-way driver was safely stopped late Wednesday night after traveling the wrong direction on multiple freeways in East County, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The incident began around 11:35 p.m. on March 18, 2026, when reports came in of a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of SR-94 near College Avenue.
According to CHP, the driver continued onto northbound SR-125, where an officer spotted the vehicle traveling in the opposite direction of traffic.
A CHP officer drove alongside the vehicle and used the patrol car’s intercom system to instruct the driver to pull over. The driver was able to hear the commands and pulled over just before Fletcher Parkway.
Authorities said the driver, a man in his 90s, appeared disoriented and unsure of his location.
When asked about damage to his vehicle, the driver told officers he may have hit another car, though no reports of a collision were received by CHP dispatch.
The driver told officers he was attempting to return home to the Allied Gardens area.
Officials confirmed that DUI was not a factor in the incident.
CHP arranged for the man’s family to be contacted, and his vehicle was towed from the scene.
No injuries were reported.
