A private 65-foot powerboat, identified as the Offshore Lifestyle, crashed into the USS Midway Museum on Friday, causing an estimated $100,000 in damage to the historic aircraft carrier-turned-museum.
The collision occurred just before 2 p.m. and was captured on video by the San Diego Web Cam, which livestreams the Embarcadero waterfront. The footage shows the vessel approaching the Midway at speed before slamming into the port side of the ship.
After the impact, the boat fled the scene, prompting a response from San Diego Harbor Police. Officers intercepted the vessel a short time later near the Coronado Ferry Landing, where seven people were on board.
The boat’s operator, 40-year-old Frank D’Anna, was arrested.
D’Anna faces charges including boating under the influence, hit-and-run, and operating a vessel with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. Authorities confirmed his BAC was above California’s .08 threshold.
Though the Midway’s hull remained intact, officials say the museum’s corrosion protection system was damaged in the crash. Repairs and repainting are estimated to cost approximately $100,000.
“We’re fortunate no one was injured and that the ship’s structural integrity wasn’t compromised,” said USS Midway Museum spokesperson David Koontz. He added that the museum remains open to the public, and daily operations were not impacted by the incident.
The San Diego Harbor Police and Port of San Diego are continuing their investigation.
