Board Item #13: A Budget That Protects People First
In a challenging fiscal climate, I fought to use unlocked reserves for upstream investments that protect vulnerable families and strengthen our long-term financial health. That includes rental assistance, food support, funding for domestic violence survivors, an Immigrant and Refugee Support Center, and urgent public health interventions to shield South Bay residents from the impacts of the Tijuana River pollution crisis and the harmful cuts advanced by H.R. 1 aka Trump’s Big Ugly Bill.
Passage of this item during Tuesday’s Board meeting marks a new direction for the County of San Diego—one that prioritizes the needs of our communities first. The Board approved $47.4 million in unlocked reserves, with $8.75 million in funding to address the Tijuana River pollution crisis and another $18.85 million in funding directly supporting priorities identified by my office.
Highlights of Funding Wins for District 1:
Housing & Tenant Protections: $10.7 million
Food Security & Senior Nutrition: $2.8 million
Public Safety & Health: $1.675 million
Saturn Blvd Pipe Extension: $2.5 million
AIRE Program Air Purifier Expansion: $4 million
Tijuana River Pollution Health Studies: $2.25 million
