12 Cheap Hangouts for Nature-Loving Kids in San Diego

For the kids who would rather collect sticks, stare at a bug for 20 minutes, throw rocks in water and ask to bring home every leaf they find.

Save this one for a weekday when you need to get OUT of the house without spending a fortune.

City Farmers Nursery — FREE to wander

Plants, garden paths, animals and mini donkeys  It feels more like a little farm adventure than a nursery.

Walter Andersen Nursery — Poway — FREE

Wander the nursery and check out the huge garden railroad  Trains run through little landscapes, bridges and water features.

Santee Lakes — CHEAP

Lakes, ducks, birds, trails, playgrounds and tons of room to explore. Pack snacks and you can easily spend the whole morning here.

The Water Conservation Garden — El Cajon — LOW COST

Beautiful gardens, flowers, butterflies, bugs and lots of little paths for kids to wander and investigate.

Tecolote Canyon Nature Center — FREE

Nature exhibits inside + trails outside. Great for kids who love animals, rocks, bugs and exploring without needing a huge hike.

Mission Trails Regional Park — FREE

This place can be a completely different adventure every time. Start at the Visitor Center so the kids can check out the nature displays, then head outside for trails, rocks, native plants and wildlife. For a gentler outing, explore around Kumeyaay Lake and look for birds and critters. If everyone is feeling adventurous, try part of Oak Canyon for trees, creek beds and seasonal water. You absolutely do not have to do a full hike — wander until somebody melts down and turn around

Balboa Park Gardens — FREE

Explore the Botanical Building, roses, cactus gardens, huge trees, flowers and koi. Great for a nature day that doesn’t require hiking boots.

Morley Field Nature Exploration Area — FREE

Logs, rocks, sand and natural play instead of a traditional playground. Perfect for kids who would rather climb something than use a slide.

Waterwise Botanicals — Bonsall — FREE to wander

A huge succulent nursery with gardens, ponds and plenty of little wildlife to spot along the way

San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center — FREE

Easy lagoon trails, birds, water and a nature center. Such a good North County spot for little explorers.

Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center — Oceanside — FREE

Nature displays + a short lagoon trail where you can look for birds and wildlife. Another really easy North County morning outing.

Sweetwater Marsh / San Diego Bay National Wildlife Refuge — FREE

Wetlands, birds and marsh trails without needing a serious hike. Great for little kids who love stopping every six feet to inspect something.

Bonus spots:

Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge for coastal wetlands and bird watching, and Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve when you’re ready for a slightly bigger outdoor adventure.

Honestly, some of the best kid outings are the ones where there is barely anything “planned” at all. Just let them wander around outside and investigate everything.
