A wanted parolee was taken into custody Wednesday morning after fleeing San Diego police, driving the wrong way on Interstate 8, causing a serious-injury crash, and attempting to carjack multiple vehicles before being stopped by officers.
The incident began at approximately 10:40 a.m. on July 1, 2026, when San Diego Police Department detectives spotted a wanted parolee in the area of 4500 Alvarado Canyon Road.
According to police, patrol officers attempted to stop the man and arrest him on his outstanding parole warrant as he drove westbound on Alvarado Canyon Road. Instead of yielding, the suspect fled and entered Interstate 8 by driving eastbound in the westbound lanes.
Due to the extreme danger posed by the suspect's actions, officers did not pursue him onto the freeway. Detectives quickly lost sight of the vehicle.
Police said the suspect continued traveling the wrong way in the westbound lanes of Interstate 8 before attempting to exit against traffic onto College Avenue. As he reached the off-ramp, he collided head-on with a vehicle traveling on the westbound Interstate 8 on-ramp from College Avenue.
The driver of the other vehicle suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Following the collision, multiple bystanders rushed in to assist those involved. While Good Samaritans were helping the injured victims, police said the suspect attempted to steal one vehicle and unsuccessfully tried to carjack two others in an effort to escape.
Officers from the San Diego State University Police Department quickly arrived and took the suspect into custody. According to scanner traffic, SDSU Police deployed a Taser during the arrest.
The San Diego Police Department's Robbery Unit is investigating the attempted carjackings, while the California Highway Patrol is handling the traffic collision investigation on the Interstate 8 westbound on-ramp at College Avenue.
