Two students were arrested Tuesday after allegedly bringing a replica firearm (BB gun) onto the campus of STEAM Academy, an East County magnet school in Spring Valley.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, deputies from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s Station responded to the school in the 1000 block of Leland Street after receiving reports of a student possibly armed with a firearm.

School administrators immediately placed the campus on secure status, keeping students and staff indoors while deputies investigated. Secure status was lifted a short time later after authorities determined there was no ongoing threat.

Deputies say a search of students and their belongings led to the discovery of a black metal BB gun inside a backpack. Both juveniles were arrested on suspicion of possessing a weapon on school grounds.

The Sheriff’s Department emphasized that they do not release identifying information about minors. The investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities remind the community that every potential school threat is taken seriously.

Students are encouraged to report any concerns directly to school staff, School Resource Deputies, or anonymously through the Student Speaking Out Tip Line at (888) 580-8477 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
