Eastbound drivers on State Route 54 in Spring Valley ran into a nightmare yesterday when a fiery crash near the connector to State Route 125 left one person dead and traffic frozen in place.
The collision sparked a small vegetation fire along the shoulder, shut down multiple lanes and turned the weekend commute into a long standstill while emergency crews tried to sort out the wreckage.
What officials say
According to FOX 5 San Diego, the crash was first reported around 3:34 PM, and the California Highway Patrol confirmed that one person was killed. Caltrans reported in a social media post that the right two lanes of eastbound SR-54 at the SR-125 connector were blocked as responders worked the scene.
Firefighters quickly knocked down the brush fire on the right-hand shoulder, and tow crews moved in to haul away the damaged vehicles so the freeway could reopen.
Traffic impacts
The California Highway Patrol said traffic remained at a near-standstill for hours while emergency crews stayed on scene, with eastbound lanes jammed well into the afternoon. A SigAlert initially pegged delays at roughly 30 minutes, but backups stretched from Sweetwater Road to Woodman Street as time went on.
Drivers were urged to find alternate routes while investigators documented the crash and cleanup teams worked to clear the freeway.
A dangerous stretch
This section of SR-54 has seen more than its share of serious trouble in recent weeks. On March 29, a suspected DUI crash sent a Jeep into the Sweetwater River and killed two people, leading to a prolonged closure at the SR-54 and I-5 connector, according to NBC 7 San Diego.
Caltrans has flagged nearby connectors and bridge abutments for repairs in state planning documents, which officials say is part of ongoing maintenance work along the corridor.
Investigation and next steps
The CHP said the collision remains under investigation, and the victim’s identity had not been released as of Saturday evening. Anyone with information is asked to contact the CHP San Diego area office to help investigators piece together what happened.
