Rohr Park Master Plan Feels Rushed and Bonita was Not Invited to Participate

ree

I can't put my finger on it, but something doesn't feel right about this Rohr Park Master Plan. The first thing that screams out to me is that CITY OF CHULA VISTA is stamped all over it with no mention of Bonita.

The flyer read: "Help Shape the Future of Rohr Park | Ayuda a dar forma al futuro del Parque Rohr". Meaning, the future is coming and there is going to be change. Sometimes change is very good for a community and sometimes change is very bad. What KIND of change is this?

There were two meetings. The first hour-and-a-half workshop was at a CHULA VISTA Woman's Club in CHULA VISTA. About twenty people showed up.

The second was a ten minute "Pop-Up" Event at Rohr Park in Bonita, surrounded by Bonita properties on Sweetwater Road, a Bonita Road but no mention of Bonita—even in the address. Two "meetings" in two days . . . Slam Bam Thank You Ma'am . . .the ultimate screw job.

So what is a "Pop-Up'? You got me. I know what it means when discussing a restaurant or a clothing outlet. The only pop-up I saw was a little, pop-up canopy tent.

There was a handout and some bottled water. Weren't we instructed to BEWARE of the bottle water? Maybe it was a distraction.

Here's the handout with this map on one side. I was a graphic artist at one time of my life and whenever I see a blurred-out image, I immediately begin looking for what is being hidden.

Notice how close the blurred-out houses are next to the Dog Park [1] on the left. The employee I spoke with told me the CHULA VISTA land ended on the edge of the Dog Park driveway. She also let it slip that the dog park smells badly. She felt sorry for the houses next door. Maybe that's where the Master Plan should begin.

Here's the Project Overview. Did you see when the final draft is expected? That's right . . . Winter 2025. That's December and only six months away.

They had a Post-It Board titled "I Wish Rohr Park Had . . . Tell us what you'd like to see added or improved."

Here are just a few of the comments people put up:

The employee also said "At least they aren't putting apartments in!" Were apartments EVER part of the plan . . . multi-level apartments? WHY did those words slip through her lips?

I'm not trying to alarm you. I'm just trying to get you to pay attention. It concerns me that Bonita was the last to know about this Master Plan. It is in OUR community. It might be all good and fine or we may be allowing the fox into the henhouse. You know how that turns out.

Let's be alert and be sure that this City of Chula Vista Master Plan is an asset to Bonita and not something we'll regret in the future. If only we had spoken up . . .
