Projects Slated for Bonita—Undergrounding, Bike Lanes, Road Maintenance & "Priority" Projects

Not enough Board Members showed up at the 08.05.25 Sweetwater Community Planning Committee so it was cancelled.

SD County Department of Public Works Program Coordinator, Gabriel Gutierrez & Project Manager, Richard Y. Shin were scheduled to speak.

Rather than waste their time, they presented their information . . . not to the Board of SCPG but to "Bonita residents" as the Board was no longer in session.

Not many people were in the room. My experience has taught me that is how things get slipped under the radar.

Here is their presentation on projects for 2024/2025 and 2025/2026. I only included the slides of greater importance to Bonita-Sunnyside residents.

Utility Undergrounding on Bonita Road (Phase 4)

This has been in the works for awhile and funding was needed for this final undergrounding project. Utilities will be undergrounded from approximately Frisbie Street to the the light at Bonita/San Miguel Roads.

Buffered Bike Lanes on Bonita Road

If the bike lanes are for traveling to the Bike Park, residents were assured years ago by then-Supervisor Greg Cox that parents would transport their kids and bikes by car to the Bike Park.

The only wheels on Bonita Road are 10,000 cars cutting through the neighborhood due to toll road avoidance, semi trucks doing the same and DUI drivers flipping cars and having head-ons.

Not a road I'd want my kid riding a bike on.

This is much too big an expense to justify creating pathways for bicyclists. There are very few of these in the area. This is horse country.

The next to last slide, Priority Projects in Sweetwater-Bonita, discusses the drainage on San Miguel Road.

The County really opened up Pandora's Box on that one.

Tune in tomorrow as I will tell you all the problems connected with the San Miguel Road Drainage Project.
