Paloma Aguirre & John McCann Face Off!

ree

Last night, ABC 10News hosted a debate between Mayor Paloma Aguirre of Imperial Beach and Mayor John McCann of Chula Vista. Both are running for the position of San Diego County Supervisor, District 1.

Male or female, we don't want a Nora 2.0. So I was listening intently to what these two have accomplished as mayors of their cities. As this is supposed to be a non-partisan position, I don't care what party they serve. I care about what they have done in the past in regards to their mayorship and what I hear them say they will do in the future for our District. The past is set in stone. The future is just them making promises so you can never be sure of what will actually transpire.

Mayor Aguirre was very partisan throughout the debate and that caught me off guard. I think she thought it would earn her Democratic votes but I guess she hasn't been reading the news of how many Democrats have been switching their allegiance lately. I think her partisanism might have achieved the reverse of what she was intending and actually helped Mayor McCann.

". . . working families were left behind because of MAGA politics in Washington . . . My opponent supports Trump so if you want chaos and corruption, he's your guy." —Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre

Whatever her personal opinion, she is still going to have to work in a Trump environment and her extreme partisanship could manifest as a lack of preparedness to accommodate opposing viewpoints. This could hinder effective policymaking and cause further discord on the Board of Supervisors were she to win the position.

Mayor McCann spoke about his accomplishments as mayor of Chula Vista and said it was the second largest city in San Diego County.

"You deserve leadership that delivers results. Lowing the cost of living, reducing homelessness, balancing the budget, keeping taxes low and our neighborhoods safe. That is what I've done as Mayor of Chula Vista and will do as the next Supervisor." —Chula Vista Mayor John McCann

Mayor McCann did throw some shade on Mayor Aguirre in saying she hadn't paid her property taxes in almost four years. He voiced concern that it she couldn't handle her own finances, what might happen in regard to the District 1 finances?

She responded that she was paying them now and tried to align herself with others struggling to pay their bills.

It is my opinion that Supervisors should be above all that and both of these candidates' finances should be squeaky clean. In a perfect world . . .

ABC Anchor Kimberly Hunt moderated the debate and did an excellent job. You can watch the entire hour-long debate or just the opening and closing statements of each candidate at Paloma Aguirre & John McCann face off in San Diego District 1 Debate.
