A National City mother was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly leading police on a brief pursuit with five of her children inside the vehicle.
According to the National City Police Department, officers were parked in a lot near East 18th Street and Highland Avenue when they spotted a vehicle driving erratically into the area. When they attempted to pull the driver over for a traffic violation, the suspect refused to stop, prompting a short pursuit.
The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Angelica Sanchez of National City, attempted to make a turn at Euclid Avenue and East 18th Street but lost control, jumping the curb and striking a traffic sign.
Officers took Sanchez into custody at the scene. Inside the vehicle were her five children, ranging in age from 5 to 13 years old. Medics evaluated the children, who were not injured, and released them into the care of their grandmother.
Sanchez was transported to a local hospital where she was medically cleared before being booked into Las Colinas Detention Facility. She now faces five felony counts of child cruelty, felony evading, and driving under the influence.
The investigation is ongoing.
