Clearing Out The Junk
I grew up in a working-class immigrant family where every dollar mattered, and financial stability was never guaranteed. Rent is already expensive enough—the price advertised should be the price you pay. But for too many San Diegans, junk fees, hidden charges, excessive late fees, and unnecessary application costs make housing even less affordable.
This week, I joined Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera to express my support for the City of San Diego’s proposed ordinance to increase transparency, curb excessive rental fees, and make the true cost of housing clear. This effort aligns with work underway at the County of San Diego, where I am partnering with Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe on a complementary ordinance that will be brought forward in the coming months. Together, these proposals would require upfront disclosure of recurring fees while limiting excessive add-on and unnecessary charges.
Housing affordability doesn't stop at city boundaries. Families across our region deserve a rental market that is transparent, fair, and puts people before hidden costs.
