Let’s Save Lives on Our Fields and Courts

Next week, I’ll be asking the Board of Supervisors to take action on something that’s simple, effective, and life-saving: expanding access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for sports facilities and youth sports teams across San Diego County.

We’ve all heard the tragic stories — young athletes collapsing on the field or court from sudden cardiac arrest. In too many cases, an AED wasn’t available, and a life was lost that might have been saved. This can’t continue.

Starting in 2027, California law will require AEDs at all youth sports practices and games. But many teams simply don’t have the funds to comply. These organizations rely on donations and volunteers — and the cost of an AED is out of reach for too many.

That’s why I’m calling on the County to step up. I’m asking for the creation of a grant or rebate program to help these teams and facilities get AEDs, provide training, and ensure this life-saving equipment is available when it’s needed most.

If we can save just one life, it’s worth it. I hope you’ll join me in supporting this vital effort to protect our athletes, coaches, and spectators.
