Huge Sporting Goods Store Coming to San Diego County with Plans to Hire 150

The fishing, camping and outdoor sports center plans to open in 2028
A Bass Pro Shops plans to open a giant store in La Mesa’s Grossmont Center mall in 2028.
This 148,000-square-foot outdoor sports and fishing hub will be the company’s first San Diego store and the sixth in California. Bass Pro Shops has 182 stores in North America. The store could employ more than 150 people, the company said.
According to its website, Bass Pro Shops sells everything from coolers to kayaks to tents to handguns to gun safes. Bass Pro Shops also specializes in fishing gear and boats, as its name signals.
Johnny Morris, who founded Bass Pro Shops in 1972 in Missouri, said in a news release that this area has saltwater and freshwater fishing, which makes it “something truly special.”
La Mesa Mayor Mark Arapostathis said that he was excited the company is coming to La Mesa.
“This announcement is another exciting milestone in the ongoing transformation of Grossmont Center,” Arapostathis said.
The company gives a 10% discount to veterans, active military, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and state fish and wildlife agency employees with its Legendary Salute Program.
The closest Bass Pro Shops are in Irvine and Rancho Cucamonga.
The store will join a fast-changing mall. The center is getting a $10 million face-lift and AMC Theatres recently announced it will open a theater that will replace Reading Cinemas.
