San Diego Police bike officers quell massive street fight in Gaslamp with pepper spray

A massive street fight outside one of downtown San Diego’s busiest taco shops spiraled into near-total chaos over the weekend, with men and women trading punches in the Gaslamp Quarter before a wave of San Diego Police Department bicycle officers descended on the scene and repeatedly deployed pepper spray into the crowd.

Video originally posted to Instagram by @jason.guarnes appears to show the confrontation unfolding outside Tacos El Gordo near Fifth Avenue and F Street during the early morning hours of Sunday, August 23, following what witnesses and other media reports described as a Saturday-night altercation that carried into the overnight period. According to SDPD, Bike Team officers first intervened around 1am after witnessing a physical fight between two men in the 500 block of F Street.

The footage (which can be seen below in link) is chaotic from the outset. Several fights appear to be happening at once, with two men grappling, then a woman throwing punches at one of the men, then another woman attacking the punching woman, then a man attacking her. Then people are all pulling at one another as people crowd the sidewalk and roadway. At one point, a man appears to be pinned face-down against the hood of a vehicle while officers move through the scene. Another pair can be seen wrestling on or near the pavement.

The spray appears to go almost everywhere. Footage shows officers firing repeated streams into the immediate crowd as people stagger backward, cover their faces and attempt to move away. FOX 5/KUSI reported that bystanders said some people who were merely standing nearby were also exposed to the chemical spray as officers tried to regain control of the scene.

EDITOR'S NOTE: I haven't been to Gaslamp in a very long time. I guess things are a little different there now.
