On Sunday, January 18, 2026, at approximately 11:00 a.m., deputies from the Sheriff’s Rancho San Diego Station and Imperial Beach Station responded to reports of multiple small fires in the 5700 block of Quarry Road, near State Route 125 and State Route 54.
Fire crews quickly arrived and extinguished the fires. With assistance from witnesses and the Sheriff’s helicopter, ASTREA, deputies located a male suspect hiding in nearby bushes. A records check revealed the suspect had an extensive criminal history and was currently on probation.
During a probation compliance search, deputies discovered narcotics paraphernalia, a torch lighter, an expandable baton, and numerous credit cards, identification cards, and other items containing personal identifying information that did not belong to the suspect.
Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson detectives responded to the scene and documented six separate fire locations within close proximity. Approximately one-quarter acre of vegetation beneath State Route 125 was burned.
The suspect was arrested on narcotics, weapons, and identity theft-related charges and booked into custody. The arson investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office at [858-868-3200].
