On June 6th, I Love Bonita presented an E-Bike Safety Workshop hosted by the Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Department at the firehouse on Bonita Road.

The workshop was well attended by community members—parents and children alike. The estimated age range of the children was 9 to 16. About 22 participants in all.

The workshop was instructed by Sal Castro (Public Information Officer from California Highway Patrol), Greg Carter (Chief Fun Officer at Pedego Electric Bike shop located in Santee), Fire Captain Josh Krimston (Bonita-Sunnyside Fire Department) and Mieka Portier (Vice President of Bonita Valley Horseman).

Greg Carter went over proper riding and safety procedures while using a e-bike. He also discussed safe charging practices. Greg offers riding classes at his shop. There was a short question and answer period. Very educational.

Bonita Valley Horsemen covered the proper trail etiquette when approaching horses . The main point to the group was to be educated on being aware of surroundings, being heard by equestrians when approaching and to slow down or stop until equestrians pass.

Officer Castro probably had the most impact on the group by interacting with the attendees and answering their questions. He spoke a lot about the laws and consequences for not following the rules of the road. The majority of complaints coming into the CHP are about off road e-motorcycle groups on the roadways. Officer Castro got the parents' attention when discussing consequences and costs when their children get caught breaking the law.
