County Support Helps Kinship Caregivers Provide Stable Homes for Children
September is National Kinship Care Month, a time to honor grandparents, aunts, uncles, adult siblings, godparents, stepparents and close family friends who step up to raise children when their parents cannot. In San Diego County, about half of all children in out-of-home care live with kinship caregivers.
Kin placements are preferred because they keep children connected to their families, traditions, and culture. But kinship care often begins suddenly, and relatives may not have the resources to care for a child—especially one with medical or developmental needs.
County Child and Family Well Being offers a wide range of resources that help kinship caregivers provide stable, safe homes where children can thrive. Case management, mentoring, training, education and childcare are just some of the support options available to kin families.
For one local grandparent, those resources made all the difference — giving her what she needed to be the best parent possible to her granddaughter.
