County Animal Services Rescues Small Dog in Drain

County Animal Services rescued a small dog from a Spring Valley storm drain Monday after officers found her trapped and unable to climb out.

Animal control officers responded to the 600 block of Felicita Avenue in Spring Valley. Officer Myers climbed into the storm drain, used treats to coax the dog close, then lifted her to Lt. Raygosa at street level.

Staff brought her to the Bonita animal shelter, where she was cleaned, fed, vaccinated and checked for a microchip. Shelter staff said she appeared underweight, very hungry and had a dirty coat, suggesting she may have been lost for some time.

Later that day, a woman arrived at the shelter reporting her dog, Teddy, had been missing for more than 30 days. She said her family had been searching extensively — posting flyers, driving the neighborhood daily and working with local dog rescuers.

Based on the information she provided, shelter staff confirmed the rescued dog was Teddy. While Teddy was initially withdrawn, she became alert the moment she saw her owner, wagging her tail and howling with joy. Her owner expressed deep gratitude for Teddy’s safe return and thanked staff for their help.

County Animal Services promotes the humane and responsible care of pets in the unincorporated areas of San Diego County. The department provides 24-hour animal rescues, supports residents who can no longer care for their pets, investigates and stops animal neglect and cruelty, enforces state and local laws, and educates the public about animal welfare, restraint and licensing.
