A 25-year-old man is lucky to be alive after his vehicle plunged hundreds of feet into a canyon Wednesday night in Chula Vista, rolling multiple times before coming to rest with extensive damage. The crash was reported at approximately 10:44 p.m. on June 10, 2026, near 1142 Camino Cantera.

According to emergency radio traffic, the sedan drove off the end of a dead-end street and tumbled approximately 200 to 300 feet down a steep canyon. The vehicle reportedly rolled multiple times during the descent, leaving it heavily damaged.

Despite the violent crash, the driver survived with what appeared to be only minor injuries. Neighbors in the area assisted the man after the crash, and he was ultimately able to walk out of the canyon under his own power before being evaluated by first responders.

Medical communications identified the driver as a 25-year-old male. As a precaution due to the severity of the rollover, he was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital's trauma center for further evaluation.

Chula Vista Police officers at the scene indicated DUI was suspected, though investigators were awaiting a medical evaluation and additional evidence before making a determination.

Due to the challenging terrain and access issues, the severely damaged vehicle was left in the canyon overnight and is expected to be recovered by a tow company the following morning.

The Chula Vista Police Department Traffic Division is investigating the cause of the crash.

The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly a mistake behind the wheel can turn deadly. Despite rolling hundreds of feet down a canyon, the driver escaped what could have easily been a fatal crash.
